| andaryl's Full Review: Goose Island Oatmeal Stout |
I’m sorry, I saw the heading on their website, and thought it was so funny I had to use it. The joke's almost as bad as the Lamb Chops that are not too baaaaad, but such is the base of my humor.
Now I’m sure I’m not the only one here who got one of those Goose Island gift packs for Christmas with 2 each of 6 brands. I decided to stick my hand in there last night and pick one out at random. I couldn’t have picked better than an oatmeal stout, as my garage temperature is perfect for these late at night.
From Chicago, Goose Island is a relatively new brewery, since 1995, and has a production capacity of 60,000 barrels a year. This makes it a little bigger than a microbrewery. There were 6 different styles in my pack, and I have read about others, which I believe may change from time to time. The beers have gained several award recognitions, and do seem destined to a successful future, both through attractive marketing, and from what I’ve heard well received brews.
Goose Island Oatmeal Stout
Served in a brown 12oz bottle, you are first greeted by a goose, neck extended, who looks like he’s begging for a drink. The whole label in color and design is very attractive and appealing, and looks like something worth a try. We’re also told that this is a bottle-conditioned ale, even more inviting.
A little effort was required in the pour, but I did get a nice creamy tan head. The beer itself is black with a little hint of brown or ruby. At 68 SRM, it certainly is a dark colored brew. Immediately on the nose I got a strong smell of malt and chocolate with a little coffee. A swirl around the glass also revealed a cleaner alcohol aroma.
On the palette it was much thinner than I expected with a fairly light body. The dominant flavor was roasted caramel malt and chocolate. Overall it was very smooth and creamy on the mouth. It finished with a dry burnt aftertaste, which did turn more bitter as it settled. At 5% ABV, it’s not too strong, but rather a very pleasant and easy drinking stout.
This certainly was a great introduction to the brews of Goose Island, and I am looking forward to trying the rest of the pack.
This would make a great dessert beer either alone or with cheesecake. However it’s also light enough to be a versatile food beer. Steak, or Meat & Potatoes would work best, but so would shellfish or stew.
