Wednesday night was quite an adventure. Having already posted reviews on Lindeman’s Kriek and Michelob Bock, I did try a few other beers that night. Needless to say, I did have a headache the next day.
The next update comes with a very fine experience in a bottle of Sierra Nevada Porter. This was a neat looking bottle. It was actually just a regular 12oz bottle but I’m used to seeing my porters come in something bigger, so this did have some kind of novelty. You almost expect from the small bottle and the light blue label that this isn’t going to be a dominating porter. As for the words “entirely handmade in the old world tradition, using only the finest barley, malts, whole hops, brewer’s yeast and water”, well that didn’t tell me much. So many of these labels make me think so what? Tell me something unique. Why should I choose this beer over anybody else’s?
Anyway once past the bottle, things got a little more interesting. Unlike the marketing department, the brewmasters themselves had created a beer that needed to be noticed. This is not a dark beer as porters go; it is black essentially but borders close to a dark amber, with a creamy head. Throughout the nose and flavor you can’t help thinking of a Sierra Pale Ale, with it’s hops and bitterness. In fact if you’d blindfolded me and asked me to tell you who makes this porter, I’d have probably got it first time. That aside you do get a malty aroma, and the traditional porter flavors, maltiness and a little chocolate. The finish has a pleasant dry bitterness.
This is a great porter and one I thoroughly enjoyed. As porters go it’s light and easy to drink. It would be a great first porter for a Sierra Pale Ale drinker, due to the similarities. This also feels like a great food beer. Porters usually go with dark meats, but this is much more versatile and therefore you could add most dishes.
